75 turned into 100

xr100_resized

On a recent trip up north we stopped by a bike and snowmobile boneyard for a look around. In the four feet of weeds on the overgrown lot were a lot of old picked over carcasses of once great racing bikes from the last couple decades. I dug around for a while trying to spot an xr75 frame but only found a rough xl75 one that was bent. But then under an old Yamaha I found the left overs of a 1986 xr100 with most of its driveline still on it. So I picked it up and now have it safe and sound on the bench ready to get some much needed attention after years of neglect. Cost for of frame – $50

One piece at a time

Its been kind of quiet on the old interweb site due to not having much to write about. But today I’ve started a new project that I’m kind of excited about, and I think its going to be really cool. I was inspired by Johnny Cash’s “One piece at a time” and that awesome psychobilly cadillac. If you haven’t seen that car you are missing out.

So here’s the plan. Honda XR75s are awesome little mini bikes. My buddy has one and my Dad just picked one up. After looking around at the ones on ebay they seem a little out of my price range for something that’s basically an expensive toy. To get around this I will try building up a XR75 from nothing, buying odd bits of Honda’s that have passed on to the scrap yard. I will also be doing everything I can to keep the cost down on this build. Kicking this project off is a set of front forks and triple clamps from a 2003 Honda XR100. From what I have read they will fit a 75 frame but to be honest I have my doubts. But that’s what welders and sawzalls are for right?

So not bad for $26 bucks, shipping was only $19. So lets hope this ends up looking like the picture below and not horribly deformed Honda mutant.

I can’t shake the thought of a leaking, smoking, gangley looking bastard child of 25 years of Honda products coming from this. Best not to think about some things. Onwards and upwards!

Nothing else going on, heres some crap from work

Its Tuesday, I’m bored. Heres a broken IBM Netvista to stare at.

<KENOX S1050  / Samsung S1050>

Notice the two caps have decided to poo their inards out. It took me a bit to find these guys since IBM thought it a good idea to leave 50mm of legs left on the capacitors so when they blew, it didnt pop the top, just slid out the bottom. It may have been a refurb board or repaired in the past, but the solder points looked to be factory so who knows. Replaced them with a set of 10v 1000uf surface mount caps. The surface mount stuff was a little tricky to get on the board but we had a reel of them on hand. That fixed fixed the little IBM and stopped all the memory corruption errors it was getting. Back to work.

Desert Dingo Racing

Found a neat article on Wired.com today about a homegrown Baja 1000 racing team that runs a stock VW Bug, with a cage and other rally kit tacked on. The cars nothing crazy, but they really do a good job of documenting a large part of their experiences and keeping you in the know of what’s going on.

Sketchy Santas

You’ve all seen them. The mall Santas that look like they crawled out from under a Christmas dumpster. Some are skinny, some are fat, and the few good ones stand out above the rest. The following website is not dedicated to those good Santas, but the later. So click on the link and enjoy. Merry Christmas!
